The School Project
The school is located in one of the most dangerous and poverty stricken areas of Managua, amongst a settlement of tiny shacks with about 3,000 people living in extreme poverty. The homes are made mostly of cardboard, tin and plastic, and there are no social programs of any kind to assist these families.. Managua slums are considered among the worst in the world. Gangs rule the area so children are destined to join the gangs or risk harassment or even death. Education is the solution.
Since Fe Viva committed to support the once-failing school, a daily feeding and nutrition program was started for a total of 200 students. Fe Viva hopes to move the school ministry to a new nearby location where a larger school can be built. Fe Viva holds title to the present building, but the land is owned by the government. There is no school yard.
The need for a new facility is great. One thousand other children are still walking the streets, destined to join the gangs unless they are given the opportunity for quality education. We hope to address this need as funding permits.
The cost to keep the present school open for one year is $20,000 USD for salaries, utilities, and supplies. The additional modest open-air school building would cost an estimated $50,000.
